PANGYAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL is the lone secondary school of Barangay Pangyan, Glan, Sarangani Province. It is located along the National Highway facing Pangyan Central Elementary School. Its area is about twenty-eight thousand square meters (28,000 sq. m) sliced from the 19.8 hectares of Pangyan reserved school site with declared Presidential Decree No.19 GSS 1420.The school is about twenty-three (23) kilometers south of Poblacion, Glan.
In 1968, the school existed as Pangyan Barrio High School for three (3) years and was proposed to become Pangyan Agriculture High School. It was through the initiative of Mr. Vicente Lopez Sr. who was that time the Head Teacher of Pangyan Elementary School with two (2) other teachers. Mr. Vicente Lopez Sr. opened Pangyan Barrio High School occupying a building in the elementary school. However, its operation was short lived because it was closed in 1972 due to armed conflict between government forces and Muslim Rebels.
In 1983, after eleven (11) years of closure and with the great desire of the community and with the effort of Mr. Ernesto E. Deposa (retired) Head Teacher of Pangyan Elementary School, Pangyan High School reopened as an annex of Glan-Padidu Barangay High School with Mr. Teodulo Q. Cagatin Jr. who was hired by the PTCA to handle more than forty (40) students and served likewise as Teacher-In-Charge of the school with five teachers. On March 1987, the first product of the school graduated with only eighteen (18) students. It was also in this year that the school operated as a complete secondary institution with only five (5) faculty members whose 40% percent of salaries were taken from the PTCA collections and 60% percent from the Municipal Government. These five teachers were Mr. Teodulo Q. Cagatin Jr. who in 1987 transferred to Glan-Padidu Barangay High School, Mrs. Frunnie R. Castillo who succeeded Mr. Cagatin as TIC, Mr. Ronnie T. Recto who transferred to Baliton NHS. Both Mr. Recto and Mrs. Castillo are now retired District Supervisor and Secondary School Principal II respectively.
In 1988, upon the rationalization of Barangay High Schools based on Republic Act (R.A) 6655- known as the Free Education Act, teachers were then included in the Plantilla of Glan Padidu National High School being the mother school. In 1989, upon the suggestion of Barangay Captain Rodolfo Bellen, Mr. Ernesto E. Deposa, Mr. Ronnie T. Recto and Mrs. Frunnie R. Casillo, PNHS became an independent school. Initial processing of application papers was done and submitted to DECS higher authorities.
To comply with the school site requirement, the current school site which at the time was under court litigation was sliced from the Pangyan Reserved School site. Follow-ups were
undertaken at the Court of First Instant (CFI) and Court of Appeals (CA) in Manila for the resolution of Court Case No. 10674.
In February 1990, a building which cost Php 996,000.00 was proposed to be built at the site, however the occupants refused to vacate it voluntarily so the budget was realigned and was given to the school. Judicial proceeding was sought to repossess the area through the support of the PTCA led by Mr. Leonardo Lebajon, then the PTCA President. On July 1990, demolition was conducted evicting the occupants using Court Order brought by Sherriff Requillos.
The site was surveyed and assessed for Pangyan NHS. In June,1992 the makeshift building was transferred from the elementary to its present site led by PTCA President Hilario Bagando. Simultaneously, papers were reconstructed after a status quo on its application. Through the recommendation and endorsement of Superintendents Mr. Abdulfarid Maglangit and Mrs. Letecia E. Cabang of the newly created Sarangani Division, and school heads of mother school, Mrs. Violeta B. Abasola and Mrs. Meriam C. Cocos, papers were reprocessed. Approval of its independence was then elusive since certification of undertaking the school’s operation while waiting for approval cannot be given by the Municipal Government due to financial constraints. Assistance from Honorable Congressman Lames L. Chiongbian was sought. Then finally on February, 1998 after 15 years of being an annex school, Pangyan National High School was granted independence through the approval of the then DECS Secretary Erlinda C. Pefianco.
